A more durable display generally means fewer repairs and less downtime over the life of the installation. Although the initial purchase price may be slightly higher, the total cost of ownership can often be lower.
Think About Lifetime Value, Not Just Purchase Price
When specifying an LED video wall, it’s easy to compare quotations and simply choose the lowest number.
But it’s worth asking a few important questions:
- How long will this display be in service?
- What happens if a panel becomes damaged?
- Will the image quality still meet expectations in five years’ time?
- Is the saving today worth compromising on durability or performance?
The difference between a budget SMD display and a higher-specification COB or MIP solution may represent only a small percentage of the overall project cost, particularly when installation, mounting, control systems and commissioning are taken into account.
For many projects, that modest increase in budget can deliver a noticeably better user experience and greater long-term reliability.
The Right Technology for the Right Application
This isn’t to say that every project should specify COB or MIP.
There are many applications where a conventional SMD LED display remains the most appropriate and cost-effective choice. Outdoor displays, large viewing distances and budget-conscious projects can all benefit from modern SMD technology.
The key is ensuring the specification is driven by the application’s requirements rather than simply the lowest purchase price.
An LED video wall is a long-term investment, not a disposable purchase.

Every installation is unique. Viewing distance, ambient lighting, content type, operating hours and environmental conditions all influence which technology will deliver the best results.
